Listing Guidelines

The Problem We’re Solving

Finding a trustworthy masonry or concrete contractor in the Boston area shouldn’t require dozens of phone calls, three conflicting estimates, and a leap of faith. Too many homeowners and property managers end up hiring based on a clever website or a contractor’s promise — and then discover halfway through the project that something doesn’t add up.

The Keystone exists because we spent years doing exactly that. We learned the hard way what separates honest, professional contractors from ones who cut corners or disappear when something goes wrong. Our directory is built on real project experience, not endorsement deals or paid placement.

If your business meets our standards, we want you on The Keystone — because readers need access to contractors they can trust, and those contractors deserve recognition for doing professional, honest work.

Step Through the Process

1. Reach Out

Fill out our suggestion form at the bottom of the “Suggest a Business” page. Tell us about your company, your specialties (masonry repair, tuckpointing, concrete restoration, etc.), and how long you’ve been in business. Include a portfolio link or examples of your work if you have one. This isn’t a sales pitch — we’re gathering enough information to open a conversation.

2. We Verify the Basics

We confirm that you hold current licenses and certifications for your trade. For masonry and concrete contractors in Massachusetts, that means verifying your contractor’s license through the state, confirming insurance coverage, and checking references. We also look at how long you’ve been operating — we favor contractors with a consistent track record.

3. We Schedule a Conversation

If the paperwork checks out, we reach out to have a real conversation. We want to understand your approach to customer communication, how you handle unexpected problems on a job, and what your quality standards are. This is where we get a sense of who you are as a contractor — not just whether you have a license.

4. We Evaluate Your Work

Before you go live on The Keystone, we want to see your work in real life. That might mean visiting a completed repointing job, evaluating before-and-after photos from a concrete restoration, or speaking with past clients. This step takes time, but it’s where we actually confirm that the quality matches your reputation.

5. You’re Listed

Once you’re approved, you’ll be featured on The Keystone with a detailed profile, links to your business, and information about your specialties and service area. Our readers will know that you’ve passed our vetting process — and that means something to them because they know we don’t sell listings or accept paid placement.

The Mistake Most People Make

“I assumed that because my website looks professional and I have good reviews online, I’d automatically get listed. I didn’t realize that The Keystone vets contractors in person — they’re not impressed by online marketing, only by real work.”

— A masonry contractor who applied after doing excellent work for five years

The Keystone isn’t a directory service where you pay a fee and get listed automatically. We’re not a review site where the most recent five-star comment makes your day. Our vetting is real and personal because that’s the only way our listing means anything to the readers who rely on it.

When you apply, expect us to ask detailed questions, request references, and ask to see your work. If we ask for more information, don’t take it as rejection — it means we’re serious about getting to know whether you belong on The Keystone.

Questions Before You Commit

How long does the approval process take?

It depends on how quickly we can verify your credentials and evaluate your work. Most contractors are approved within 4-8 weeks from initial contact. If we need more time to visit a job site or contact references, it might take longer — but we’ll keep you updated throughout.

Do you accept listings from contractors outside Boston/MA?

We focus on the Boston metro area and greater Massachusetts. If you’re based elsewhere but serve some of these areas, apply — we’ll discuss service boundaries and make sure there’s a genuine local presence before listing you.

Is there a cost to being listed?

No. The Keystone doesn’t charge contractors for listing placement or maintain any “premium” tier where you can pay for more visibility. Being on The Keystone is free — and the listings are honest.

What if I don’t get approved?

We’ll give you honest feedback about why. Sometimes it’s a licensing issue that can be resolved — you can reapply later. Sometimes it’s about the quality of your work or how you conduct business with customers — those things take time to change, but they’re not permanent barriers.

What to Consider First

Before you apply, ask yourself these questions.

Are your licenses current?

Seriously — check right now. If your Massachusetts contractor’s license is expired, renew it before reaching out. We verify this immediately.

Can you talk about your work honestly?

We’re going to ask you tough questions about your approach, your quality standards, and how you handle problems. If you’re comfortable being transparent, you’re ready.

Do you have past clients you’re proud to reference?

We’ll likely contact them. If you can’t think of 2-3 people who’ll speak positively about your work, that’s a sign the time isn’t right to apply yet.

Is your work visible and recent?

We want to see completed projects — ideally ones we can visit or that are documented well. If all your work is from five years ago, you’ll need more recent examples.

If you meet these standards and you’re ready to be evaluated in depth, we’d like to hear from you. Our readers are actively looking for contractors they can trust — and if you’re the right fit, being on The Keystone can put your work in front of people who genuinely need and value what you do.
